This client came to recognize that further growth on a very constricted
hospital campus was unwise, and engaged our team to evaluate 5 potential
sites for a fresh start on the growing edge of the city. The selected site
was a 100-acre parcel on a prominent hill on the west end of the city. I was
the primary planner for a mixed-use development of the parcel, as well as
designer of the new clinic building.
The client used the new building as an opportunity to redesign their
operational systems and staffing model, for improved efficiency and patient
convenience. The clinic design was developed directly from the
operational model. A 4-story light well provides light & views deep into the
core of the building as well as making the function of the facility very
legible.
The overall form of the building alludes to
Dubuque's ties to the river - the bluffs, water
and distinctive steel arch bridge.
