Creating a sense of place and an image of permanence were key goals for the
hospital owner in establishing a welcoming yet dignified presence in a
growing area of the city. Perched on a high point in an area of
rolling terrain, the design sought to invite natural light and expansive
views into the heart of the building’s four floors .
A key strategy was the use of a terraced healing garden roughly in the form
of an amphitheater, bringing light and controlled views to the lower floors
on the uphill side of the building. The main entry space is a double-height
space with generous glazing and sky lighting, providing the character of a
“garden room" to the lobby as well as adjacent food service and retail
spaces.
